Today I want to talk about Snot. No, not the stuff that comes out of your nose... didn't you notice the capitol 'S'?
Snot was a punk/metal band; tending toward the metal end. They only had one album released, called 'Get Some', back in '97 or '98. They had one song on the radio for a while called "The Box". It was this song that got me into Snot.
In late summer of 1999 (I think that's right) their lead singer, Lynn Strait got killed in a car crash along with his dog (and band's mascot) Dobbs. Although Snot wasn't a huge band, Lynn's death hit the hard rock/metal scene pretty hard. He was a guy that everyone liked.
As testimony to this, a bunch of his musician friends got together with the surviving members of Snot and made a tribute album to Lynn called "Strait Up". You may have heard the song "Angel's Son" on the radio or seen the video; it was the Snot guys with a couple of the guys from Sevendust. The video is very touching... it nearly made me cry, and that's not an easy feat.
Some of the other artists on the album include Serj from System of a Down, Brandon from Incubus, Mark from Sugar Ray, MCUD from hed(pe), a couple of the guys from Slipknot.... It was really a moving thing, considering the band was still relatively unknown.
The tragic thing about it is the potential this band had. Lynn had a dynamic, strong voice. It was his voice that drew me the most to the band. But don't get me wrong; the whole band is awesome.
The reason I bring this up is that I was leafing through my CD book while driving home the other day, and popped the Snot CD in the player. I hadn't listened to it in a really long time, and I'd forgotten just how much I love the CD. They also have another kick-ass song called "Absent" which was on the 'Strangeland' soundtrack.
Anyway... if you like hard rock or heavy metal, I suggest giving Snot a listen.
Which reminds me... I once pulled up next to a car at a stop light, and I could hear them blasting Snot on their stereo. You know how you get into songs more when you hear them on the radio? Partly because you didn't expect it, but partly because it tells you that other people out there like the song maybe as much as you. Anyway, hearing Snot on this girl's stereo was like that, but more powerful. It brought a lump to my throat because it meant that Lynn was still alive in our memories and thoughts, and that he will not be forgotten.
Peace.

'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come her
